Tattoo Aftercare Procedure
(with Second-Skin Application)

Using a second-skin product like Saniderm or Tegaderm can be a great option for tattoo aftercare, especially in the initial days after getting your tattoo. These products provide a protective barrier against bacteria, dirt, and moisture while allowing the skin to breathe, which can help speed up the healing process. Here's how you can incorporate the use of second-skin products into your tattoo aftercare routine.

Day 1: Immediately After Getting Your Tattoo

Every website has a story, and your visitors want to hear yours. This space is a great opportunity to give a full background on who you are, what your team does and what your site has to offer. 1. Leave the Bandage On

- Saniderm, Tegaderm, or other second-skin bandages are typically applied by me right after your session. These products are designed to protect the tattoo in the first stages of healing.

- Keep the second-skin bandage on for at least 4 hours or as recommended by your artist. Ideally, keep it on for about 12-24 hours unless the second-skin gets pierced or compromised; you want to take it off right away so that bacteria cannot get trapped inside. Alternatively, if you notice that your skin is drying/cracking underneath then you must remove it, as well. If you're unsure if it needs to be removed, please feel free to contact me and ask!

- Please avoid excessive sweating!

2. Remove the Bandage

- After the recommended time has passed, carefully remove the second-skin bandage. Wash your hands before touching your tattoo.

- Run lukewarm water on the second-skin while carefully peeling off the bandage. I recommend pulling the bandage opposite of the skin (away from the skin and not at and angle).

3. Wash Your Tattoo

- Once the second-skin bandage is completely removed, clean your tattoo gently with lukewarm water and mild, unscented soap (e.g., Dial or Dr. Bronner’s).

- Use your clean hands to gently wash off any remaining ink, ointment, or blood. DO NOT use a washcloth or anything abrasive.

4. Apply a Thin Layer of Ointment or Lotion

- After drying the tattoo with a clean paper towel or air drying, apply a thin layer of tattoo-specific ointment (like Aquaphor, Tattoo Goo, or Hustle Butter).

- Be sure not to over-apply—just a thin, even layer to keep the tattoo moisturized.

Day 2–3:
Use of
Second-Skin

1. Reapply Second-Skin (Optional)

- Leave the second-skin bandage on for about 3-5 days. This helps to maintain a moist environment that promotes quicker healing. If the second-skin gets pierced or compromised; you want to take it off right away so that bacteria cannot get trapped inside. Alternatively, if you notice that your skin is drying/cracking underneath then you must remove it, as well. If you're unsure if it needs to be removed, please feel free to contact me and ask!

- During this period, you can go about your regular activities, as the second-skin will keep your tattoo safe from external elements. It will also trap any plasma or fluid that leaks from the tattoo, reducing the risk of scabbing.

2. Monitor for Issues

- While the tattoo is covered by second-skin, it’s important to check for signs of irritation or infection. If you see any of the following, remove the second-skin and please contact me:

- Excessive redness or swelling

- Unpleasant odor or leaking fluid

- Severe blistering

Day 4–14:
After Removing Second-Skin

1. Gently Clean and Moisturize

- Once you remove the second-skin after a few days (usually around day 3-5), begin your regular aftercare routine:

- Gently wash the tattoo with lukewarm water and mild, unscented soap again.

- Pat it dry with a clean paper towel or let it air dry.

- Apply a thin layer of tattoo-specific ointment (like Aquaphor, Tattoo Goo, or Hustle Butter).

2. Do not apply another second-skin

- At this stage, you no longer need to reapply second-skin bandages. The tattoo should be healing, and the skin will naturally begin to peel and flake (some do not flake). Allow it to breathe and continue your regular aftercare routine.

Days 15–30:
Continued Care

1. Keep Moisturizing

- Continue moisturizing the tattoo daily with the same ointment or lotion. Do not over-apply lotion; just a thin layer will help keep the tattoo hydrated.

2. Avoid Sun Exposure

- Keep your tattoo out of direct sunlight. UV rays can cause fading and damage to the tattoo, so cover it up or use sunscreen with SPF 30+ once fully healed (usually after about 4 weeks).

3. No Swimming or Soaking

- Avoid submerging the tattoo in pools, hot tubs, or oceans for at least 2-3 weeks to prevent irritation and infection. Short showers are fine, but keep the tattoo from being in direct water flow for too long.

Signs You May Need to Remove the Second-Skin Early:

- Excessive Fluid Build-Up: If you see bubbles or liquid under the second-skin, it may indicate that the tattoo is producing too much fluid. You should remove the bandage, clean the tattoo, and let it air out.

- Severe Redness or Blistering: If your tattoo becomes unusually red or you notice blisters forming under the bandage, remove the second-skin and let the tattoo breathe.

- Foul Odor: A strong, unpleasant odor can indicate an infection. Remove the second-skin and consult a healthcare professional.
